The 30-Second Answer
Google Ads buys traffic today. SEO builds traffic you own tomorrow. Ads put you at the top of search within days and stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build but compounds — a page that ranks keeps working without per-click costs.
That's why the real question isn't "which is better" but "what does my business need this quarter, and what do I want my cost per lead to look like next year?"
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Factor | SEO | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first results | 3–6 months | Days |
| Cost structure | Monthly retainer (₹15,000–₹1,00,000+ typical in India) | Ad spend + management; you pay per click |
| Cost over time | Falls as rankings mature | Stays flat or rises with competition |
| Trust level | High — users trust organic results | Moderate — many users skip ads |
| Stops when you stop paying | No (decays slowly without maintenance) | Yes, immediately |
| Best for testing | Weak — slow feedback loops | Strong — instant keyword/conversion data |
| Click share | Majority of clicks go to organic results | Smaller share, but fully controllable |
When Each One Wins
Google Ads wins when: you need leads this month; you're testing a new offer or market and need data fast; your keyword's organic results are dominated by giants you can't out-rank soon; you run time-bound promotions; or your site is too weak (technically) for SEO to perform yet.
SEO wins when: you can invest 6+ months; your customers search the same core queries repeatedly; you're building a brand, not just moving inventory; your margins can't absorb perpetual ad costs; or you serve a local market where map-pack visibility is winnable (see our local SEO guide).
The Budget Mix That Actually Works
For most Indian SMBs, the pragmatic split is:
- Months 0–3: 60–70% Ads / 30–40% SEO. Ads generate revenue while the SEO foundation (technical fixes, GBP, first content) is built. Ads also reveal which keywords actually convert — gold for SEO targeting.
- Months 4–9: 50/50. Organic rankings start contributing; reduce spend on keywords where you now rank organically on page one (running ads on keywords you already win organically is usually wasted spend).
- Months 10+: 30% Ads / 70% SEO. Ads stay on for competitive keywords, offers and testing; SEO carries the bulk of lead flow at a falling cost per lead.
Two warnings from experience: don't judge SEO at month two (see our realistic SEO timeline guide), and don't let an ads manager "optimize" to cheap clicks that never convert. Judge both channels on cost per qualified lead, not on traffic or clicks.
